Herbal Fix For Headaches

Everybody knows how bad a headache can be and how much it can ruin a day. All of us have had one at one time or another, either because our sinuses were acting up or because our muscles were strained. I get one often from a strained neck. Hours of peering at a computer screen with my arms stretched out over a keyboard often gives me a stiff neck and pounding headache. But I know some great herbal treatments for headaches, natural compounds that can give you quick relief without tearing up your stomach. If you’re like me, you probably also live on antacids and don’t want anything to give your tummy a reason to complain.

Most of these remedies involve herbs or other edible items that are either already around your house or can be gotten with a quick trip to the supermarket. These are easy to follow, step by step remedies that you will love making as much as you will love the relief they afford. So get out the saucepans and fire up the stove, it’s time to learn a few new tricks.

HOT CORN SOCK

Items You Will Need:

Uncooked ear of Corn (or dried Lentils or Rice)
Cotton Sock
Kitchen Gloves
Small Towel
Microwave

Instructions:

Fill a Cotton Sock (not stocking or polyester sock!) with dried corn (or lentils, or uncooked rice), knot it at the top and microwave it on medium-hot for a minute or less. Test to see if it’s too hot to the touch. Handle the hot Corn with kitchen gloves to keep from getting blistered. If it is too hot, leave it to cool for a moment. If it’s only lukewarm, return it to the microwave for another minute or less. You may wrap a very hot sock in another small towel to extend it’s use. Apply to the forehead or neck or any area that feels painful or pulsing. Reheat as needed. This will also work on sore muscles!

FEVERFEW SANDWICH

Items You Will Need:

1 large, fresh Feverfew Leaf
2 slices Bread
Condiments of your choosing

Instructions:

Simply make a sandwich, including the Feverfew leaf. You may add meats, cheeses or condiments. You may add the leaf to any sandwich or sub you are already preparing. This leaf is famous for reducing inflammation and swelling and thereby, lowering pressure on swollen tissues and membranes. It is also known for relieving migraines. This will help kill your headache and may work on sore muscles, too!

LAVENDER AND VALERIAN INFUSION

Items You Will Need:

1 tbsp of Lavender Flowers
1 tbsp of Valerian Root
1 tsp fresh or dried Skullcap
2 cups of Water

Instructions:

Bring water to a boil over medium heat in a medium saucepan. Once boiling, toss in Lavender and Skullcap. Let it boil for a full minute before lowering heat. Once boiling ceases, add in Valerian Root. Let simmer for another 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat and cover. Allow to infuse while cooling, for at least 10 minutes. Strain out flowers and herbs through a coffee filter, being careful to remove all of the small Lavender flowers. Once the tea is clear, pour it into 4oz cups or mugs and drink up to 3 times a day.

CAUTION: This tea will cure a headache over time but it will also make you sleepy. Be careful about your activities while drinking this tea. Valerian Root is “narcotic” in nature and can make you feel “spacey” or sleepy. Drink small amounts at a time and only when really needed.

LAVENDER TISANE

Items You Will Need:

1 tsp Lavender Flowers
2 cups of Water

Instructions:

Bring water to a boil and add Lavender. Reduce heat and allow to infuse for 5-10 minutes. This should be a weak tisane. Drink small amounts as needed.

CAUTION: Do not give this tisane to children. Young boys have been known to have hormonal reactions to Lavender, whether exposed to it in shampoos or soaps or whether it was drunk or eaten.

BETONY AND IVY TISANE

Items You Will Need:

1 tsp dried Betony leaves
1 tsp dried Ground Ivy
2 cups of Water

Instructions:

Bring water to a boil and add the Betony and Ivy. Lower the heat immediately, cover and allow to infuse for 10-15 minutes. This is a pleasant tasting tisane that can be taken as needed. Drink small amounts at a time up to 3 times a day.

ROSEMARY AND MARJORAM TISANE

Items You Will Need:

1 tsp fresh Rosemary Leaves
1 tsp fresh or dried Marjoram
2 cups of Water

Instructions:

Bring water to a boil and add Rosemary and Marjoram. Lower the heat and allow to infuse for up to 10 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to infuse for another 5 minutes. Strain out herbs and drink hot as needed.

Try these great recipes and see which one works best for you. They are cheap and easy to make so nothing is lost. But an awful lot is gained if you can find relief that you can make yourself for a reasonable cost and get you off the pharmaceuticals and out of the plastic bottle! Natural is always best.
