Being a victim of stomach problems that have occasionally escalated to a gastric ulcer, I am always on the lookout for natural relief. Controlling the diet and the nerves are a part of the process as well, but the main problem seems to be infection. I have had numerous stomach infections, including Type A stomach influenza, and the Doctors have suggested that I have an infection that has not been eradicated. The drug therapy they give you for this is rather intense. Currently, I am on a regimen of small meals and lots of Pepto and Zantac. I know there are natural cures for heartburn before it gets so bad that it becomes a perforated stomach lining and after that, a bleeding ulcer. And even herbal remedies that will help control the infection.
A few of the recipes I have do not taste very good but I have tried them and, like some the meds I’m taking, they are hard to swallow but super effective if you can handle it. In particular, Slippery Elm has been useful to me in the past. Peppermint is fantastic and I take it fresh if I can get it. Peppermint antacids are the best in relieving painful heartburn and gas. I have some recipes that use both Slippery Elm and Peppermint. So if you’re serious about handling your stomach problems in a natural, non drug related fashion, then you should try these recipes. As always, they are step by step and easy to follow. The ingredients are ordinary and easy to find. In the end, they won’t cost you more than the medicine you are forced to use endlessly just to tamp the fire. And there are no limits on how much or how often you can use these natural remedies, unlike the 2 week limit on Prilosec or Prevacid. There are no side effects, either.
You will make all of these recipes with regular equipment, nothing fancy is required. You can use the pots, pans and spoons you already have. And if you have a garden or live in a rural area, you can probably just wander around outside and find most of what you need. I have included pictures of the herbs in each recipe for easy identification.
Slippery Elm Infusion
Boil the water and pour over the Allspice Berries in a saucepan. Leave to infuse over very low heat for 10 minutes. Strain out the berries. Mix the Slippery Elm with a tsp of water until it becomes a paste. Add the Allspice infusion to the paste, stirring until it makes a smooth liquid. Add Lemon Juice to taste. Take a full “wineglassful” up to 3 times a day. This will soothe the digestive tract and calm an upset stomach. This will also improve the appetite.
Slippery Elm Paste
1 tbsp of powdered Slippery Elm Bark
Water as needed
Stir water into powder until it forms a paste. Stir this paste into a cup of hot Milk or Water and sweeten with Honey if desired. Drink when stomach is very upset or painful and you cannot eat. This recipe makes up a single dose. Do not drink more than one dose at a time.
NOTE: SAFE FOR CHILDREN OVER 12 MONTHS OF AGE. DO NOT USE ON INFANTS.
Chamomile and Marshmallow
Put flowers and herb into a coffemaker basket with filter. Pour 1 cup of water into a coffeemaker and turn it on. Allow water to strain through herbs and make one dose of “tea”. Leave tea in decanter on burner while cleaning out basket. Strain tea through another coffee filter into a mug or cup. This makes one dose. Drink immediately.
Bring water to a boil in a saucepan or teapot over medium heat. Once boiling, toss in petals. Allow to boil for 5 minutes and then reduce heat to low. Toss in Marshmallow Root. Cover and let simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and strain through a coffee filter or cheesecloth, making sure to remove all the root strands from the “tea”. When the tea runs clear, pour it into a mug or cup of your choice and drink immediately. Make fresh or store larger amounts for up to 3 days in the refrigerator. Drink 1 dose at a time when heartburn is a problem.
Licorice Root (for ulcers)
Either chew one dried root or take 1 tsp of powdered root as desired when heartburn is a problem. Do not take more than 1 tsp or 1 root at a time. It can have a strong laxative effect.
Fenugreek Seed Infusion
1 tsp ground Fenugreek Seed
1 cup Water
Bring water to a boil over medium heat in a small saucepan. Once boiling, toss in the seeds. Allow to boil for a full 10 minutes. Remove from heat, cover and allow to infuse for 5 more minutes. Strain out the seeds through a coffee filter or paper towel and pour clear tea into a mug. Drink as needed.
NOTE: This recipe makes one dose.
Gentian and Peppermint
Bring the Gentian and the water slowly to a boil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Simmer for 30 minutes. When the liquid has reduced down to about 2- 2-1/2 cups. Reduce the heat. Add the Peppermint, cover and leave to infuse for a few more minutes. Strain through a tight seive or a coffee filter and add Honeyto taste. Take 1 or 2 teaspoonfuls about 30 minutes before a meal.
Combine these herbs and store the mixture in a glass jar away from heat and light.
3-6 tbsp Tea Blend
3-6 cups of Boiling Water
Add the herbs to a teapot, pour boiling water (as many cups as tablespoons of tea) and let it steep for 10 minutes. Strain into a jar or vacuum-bottle. The unused tea can be refrigerated and kept for up to 3 days. After 3 days, discard and make new.
